PFC Robert C. Baca remembered on Memorial Day

I don't have many soldiers in my ancestry, at least not in more recent times. Howevever, my father served as a PFC in the US Army during the mid-1950s. Below is a photo of my father's grave.

Robert C. Baca, born 6 April 1932 in Socorro, New Mexico, died 7 June 1999, also in Socorro.

Hidden Cemetery in Bernalillo, NM

An old cemetery in Bernalillo, NM that was discovered a couple of months ago is being restored. The following information is from the KRQE Channel 13 website:

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) - The town of Bernalillo uncovered 200 years of history. Neighbors discovered an old cemetery south of U.S. Highway 550 near the railroad just two months ago.

Weeds and shrubs grew over the tombstones. Some of the graves date back to the 1800s. Few people even knew the cemetery existed.

"A lot of people walk by this cemetery on [a] particular path and don't even realize it's there," said Roxanne Smyth.

Photos from the Kit Carson Memorial Cemetery

Earlier this week, I went to Taos with my wife. While she was busy at a conference, I decided to go exploring. Imagine what I found at Kit Carson Park: The Kit Carson Memorial Cemetery! Yes, I know, only true graveyard rabbits get excited about this type of stuff.

Anyhow, I took a bunch of photos on my cell phone since I left my camera back in the hotel room. A good thing, too, since I'm still trying to figure out how to use my camera, and the photos I took with the camera came out blurry, unlike these.

As a genealogist, I like it when I find a family tree. Here is a plaque showing the Kit Carson's family who are all buried in the cemetery:

Christopher "Kit" Carson married a local woman, Josefa Jaramillo. They are buried together at the cemetery. Josefa was the last of Kit Carson's three wives. Marc Simmon's wrote about his family in the book "Kit Carson and His Three Wives".

More photos from the cemetery, including the tombstones of Mabel Dodge Luhan and Padre Antonio Jose Martinez can be found at my Facebook photo page at this link.

Guadalupe Torres, Buried in the San Miguel Church

What you see below is a memorial for Dona Guadalupe T. de Baca, which states that she was born on born 12 December 1812, and died on 4 January 1901. According to baptismal and burial records, I show that she was actually born on 17 February 1812, and died on 6 January 1900, but we won't quibble on the details.1 The memorial can be found on the wall of the San Miguel Church in Socorro, New Mexico.

According to F. Stanley's book Socorro: The Oasis, Guadalupe's second husband was buried within the north wall of the church, which is two yards thick. Stanley did not know exactly where Guadalupe had been buried, but her remains were said to be buried in the opposite wall.2 Possibly behind the spot where her memorial plaque was placed?

Her maiden name was Maria Guadalupe Torres, and she was first married to Francisco Antonio Garcia. This couple were the parents of my 3rd great grandmother Juana Maria Garcia. She married her second husband Pedro Antonio Baca after her first husband's death.

Santiago Baca's Obituary (1961)

Below is the text of my maternal grandfather's obituary. He died in 1961.

Santiago Baca Dies Suddenly at Home in Socorro Wed.

Santiago Baca, one of Socorro’s most prominent citizens, died at his home in the early morning hours of July 19th, Wednesday.

A lifetime resident of Socorro, Mr. Baca was a retired merchant.

He was born December 27, 1907 in Socorro, the son of Rafael P. Baca and Josefita Padilla Baca. His father survives.

Mr. Baca leaves his wife Paublita Z. Baca and four children, Jimmy C., Mrs. Frances R. Baca, Miss Judy Baca, all of Socorro and Miss Josie M. Baca of Albuquerque.
His father, Rafael and two brothers and two sisters also survive: Phillip Baca of Las Vegas, N.M., Alvaro Baca of Socorro and Mrs. Ramona Gonzales of Socorro and Mrs. Eugenia Salazar of Santa Fe.

Rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights at Steadman Memorial Chapel with Requiem Mass set for 9 a.m. Friday at San Miguel. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery in Socorro.

Mr. Baca contributed many years of hard work to raising educational standards in Socorro County. Trained as a school teacher at New Mexico Nor mal at Silver City and the University of New Mexico, he taught in Socorro County schools for 8 years before going into the grocery business. He was a member of the city school board for 16 years, and served on the Board of the Socorro County Schools before consolidation.

He was one of the organizing board members of the Socorro Electric Co-operative.

For 22 years he operated the “La Bajada”, a grocery store on Garfield Street, which was later the site of Scotty’s Hardware. In partnership with Mrs. Baca, he also operated Baca’s Clothiers next door to the grocery for a number of years. Honest and enterprising as a businessman, active and conscientious as a citizen, and liked and respected as a good neighbor, Mr. Baca will be missed throughout Socorro.

Obituary for Maria Guadalupe Torres

I found the following death notice on GenealogyBank.com:

Death of Mrs. G. T. de Baca

News received from Socorro states that Mrs. Guadalupe T. Baca died in that town on yesterday (sic) at the ripe age of 88 years and 33 days. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 9:30 in the forenoon. Deceased died of old age. She was a member of one of the oldest families in the territory, and the mother of Juan Jose Baca, Candelario Garcia and other well known citizens of Socorro county. She leaves many children and grandchildren to mourn her loss.

Source: "Death of Mrs. G. T. de Baca", New Mexican (newspaper), 5 January 1900, page 4. Retrieved 12 April 2010, GenealogyBank.com website, www.genealogybank.com.

Maria Guadalupe Torres was born on 17 February 1812 in Los Garcias, New Mexico (a plaza of Belen), and died before and was buried on 6 January 1900 in Socorro, New Mexico, which means she was not quite 88 years. This contradicts the age shown on the obituary.

My maternal Baca Family, part III

For the past few days, I've been researching my mother's Baca family. I've posted the first two parts of the series on The Baca / Douglas Genealogy and Family History Blog. Click on these links to read the articles: Part I and Part II.

Sometimes the best way to find cousins is to look in obituaries. After researching the 1930 United States census for my 2nd great-grandparents' children and grandchilden, I decided to search the online obituary section of the Albuquerque Journal. This is a fantastic resource for New Mexican researchers. It is an online database that contains full text obituaries published in the newspaper going back to the late 1990s. I've used it many times to fill in my family tree.

I searched by typing in names of people that I found in the census records. I came across four obituaries that contained information about distant cousins; specifically, the descendants of my 2nd great-aunt, Juliana Baca and her husband Jose Leon Benavidez.

The first three obituaries are for two children and one granddaughter of Hilario and Prescilla (Benavidez) Gonzales. Prescilla was the daughter of Juliana and Jose Leon Benavidez. I've created or found postings for these ladies on the Find a Grave website.

* Mrs. Tomasita Garcia was 86 when she died on 16 December 2002, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born to Hilario and Prescilla (Benavidez) Gonzales on 29 March 1916 in Lemitar, New Mexico. Her husband Atanacio Gonzales passed away before her. She is buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque. Her husband may be buried there also, as there is an Atanacio Gonzales listed on the Find a Grave website. I've set up a memorial for her on that website (click here.)

* Tomasita and Atanacio's daughter Mrs. Mary Elza Griego, was 52 years old when she died in Rio Rancho on 23 September 2007. She had been married for 31 years before she passed, and was survived by her husband and two children. She, too, is buried at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque. Click on this link to read her memorial on Find a Grave.

* Tomasita's sister Julia G. Baca died on 14 August 2004, in Socorro, New Mexico, at the age of 82. Her son Donald Roy Baca passed away before her. She was survived by her husband and her other children. She was born on the 4th of July 1922 in Lemitar, New Mexico to Hilario and Priscilla (Benavidez) Gonzales. Julia was buried at the San Miguel Cemetery in Socorro, New Mexico. Her Find a Grave memorial can be found at this link.

The final obituary that is for a daughter of Veronica Benavidez and Felipe Padilla. Veronica was a daughter of Juliana Baca and Jose Leon Benavidez. Although the obituary does not directly state her relationships to my Baca family, if you read her obituary (click here), and compare it to the 1930's census record (read it in my second post), you will see that this appears to be the same family. Most importantly, her estimated year of birth and the fact that she was from Lemitar seems to indicate this is the same person as Marianita who was 8 years old in the 1930 census. One thing that I like about the obituary is that it mentions a couple of Marianita's siblings who are not mentioned in the census.

* Marianita Padilla Trujillo was 76 years old when she passed away on 1 July 1998 in Belen. Throughout her life, she had lived in Lemitar, Albuquerque and Belen. She was survived by her husband, three sisters and a brother, and two daughters and a son. She was buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A memorial was posted by US Veteran Affairs on the Find a Grave website (click on this link.)

I am looking to contact members of these families. If you are from this family, or know anyone who is a member, please contact me at abqbobcat@nmia.com.

I will post a fourth part of this series on The Baca/Douglas Genealogy and Family History Blog soon. In that post, I will discuss a fact that I found in the 1930 census: that my grandfather Santiago Baca and two of his cousins were all public school teachers in that year. All were in their early twenties, and all were living in Luis Lopez, New Mexico. I will also look at the 1924 -1925 Socorro County High School yearbook for clues about these cousins.
